Self-catering holiday cottages in Salthouse
Salthouse is a typical North Norfolk coastal flint village with an impressive church for such a small place. Its name actually does derive from salt, as salt-panning was a viable industry in medieval times all along England's east coast. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and being so close to Cley-next-the-Sea this is a superb birding territory and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust owns the salt marshes behind the shingle bank. In winter, large flocks of Brent Geese cloud the sky here and a variety of slender waders probe the marshes for food.
Be sure to visit Cookies Crab shop - a locally well-known place to buy shellfish, seafood platters, sandwiches and salads. Another great place for lunch or dinner can be found at - The Dun Cow, a real traditional pub in the village serving great food, real ales and you are guaranteed magnificent views overlooking the marshes.
Salthouse really is an ideal spot to be based for exploring all the North Norfolk coast - you have so much on your doorstep, maybe head to the seaside towns of Cromer and Sheringham for family fun, take a boat trip at Blakeney to see the seals, explore the many coastal paths and cycling routes, visit the stunning sandy beaches at Wells and Holkham or maybe some retail therapy at the unique towns of Holt and Burnham Market.
