Self-catering holiday cottages in Cawston

Cawston is a fairly large, yet a compact Norfolk countryside village with a fascinating church and a good café well frequented by cyclists in what is excellent cycling territory. You have Marriott’s Way going right past the village and the local back roads are heaven-sent for those on two wheels. The village’s church is a marvel; one of the most interesting in the county and even before you enter you will be greeted by gargoyles, a green man and a dragon. Inside you will find stunning stained glass windows and a rood screen – created around 1460 and comprising about 20 paintings by Flemish artists.

The village of Cawston itself is an ideal location from which to discover the many delights of Norfolk; there are shops, a pub, deli café and award-winning restaurant. It is situated between the market towns of Aylsham and Reepham with fishing, horse riding, swimming and cycle hire all available locally. There are also many interesting walks in the surrounding countryside.

A couple of miles north of Aylsham and well worth a visit is the magnificent Blickling Hall Estate. It has been in the care of the National Trust since 1940 and the hall itself is a superb example of Jacobean architecture – dating back to the 1620s. Along with exploring the hall, you have the formal gardens and miles and miles of footpaths around the lake to discover.

The seaside town of Sheringham is just 12 miles away – great for families with its friendly and welcoming traditional seaside feel. In the other direction 12 miles away, is Norwich, with its castle, cathedrals, great shopping opportunities, pubs, restaurants and nightlife.
