Start the day with a quiet stroll (dog optional) to Heacham Beach (200 metres). Hunstanton – or Sunny Hunny as it’s known – is 3.5 miles further north, with a large sandy beach complete with rock pools and striped cliffs. Traditional family fun activities abound here, while adjacent Old Hunstanton has more of a tranquil village atmosphere. There’s loads to see in Northwest Norfolk, with stunning beaches at Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham (both 20 miles). While you’re out and about, you could treat yourself to some local seafood specialities including mussels and ‘Cromer’ crab (in season, naturally). RSPB Snettisham is 5 miles south from Heacham. At certain times of the year, thousands of wading birds gather on the mudflats here, which is quite a sight. If you’re lucky, you might also catch an aerial display. RSPB Titchwell is 9 miles around the coast to the north and has reed beds and associated birdlife.
Step up onto the tiny decked area before entering your very own shepherd’s hut and wonder at the craftsmanship of the skilled local makers. The property retains a rustic vibe, but with all the modern conveniences and luxurious touches of modern glamping – including electricity and USB ports. It’s well insulated to be cosy and comfortable, whatever the weather. Inside, there’s a double bed at the far end, a kitchenette, small table and chairs and a dresser next to the quaint (and practical) stable door. It gives new meaning to the saying ‘small, but perfectly formed’.
Outside, your private shower room and WC is nearby. Each hut also has a private garden area with deck chairs and a fire pit. There’s private parking for one car, and glampers can use the on-site shared kitchen which has more space, a microwave and a fridge to store food.
