Castle Acre takes its name from the 12th century walled Castle built by the Normans. This pretty village is steeped in history and attracts visitors who enjoy the notable Castle and Priory ruins. Located in the heart of the village is the 16th Century tavern, the Ostrich Inn, pop in for lunch or supper or enjoy a drink in the pub garden. Castle Acre lies four miles north of Swaffham market town with its range of shops and supermarkets to pick up anything you might need. The River Nar is designated a site of special scientific interest being a rare chalk stream which flows through the fields at the south end of the village and crossing the Peddars Way. It makes for a beautiful walk to spot herons, swans and wildlife and includes a fabulous view of the Priory. The Priory is a well preserved monastic order dating back to 1090 and offers guided audio tours. Pick up an ice cream from the village shop or pack a picnic to enjoy at the castle where children clamber up and down some of the most impressive earthworks in England. Stately homes such as the Queen’s Norfolk retreat Sandringham House, National Trust’s Oxburgh Hall (with a moat and priest hole) and Houghton Hall with its fabulous art collection are all on offer. The stunning Norfolk coastline is close-by and approximately 30 minutes drive from Castle Acre. This includes the RSPB Nature reserve at Snettisham and the seal boat safaris at Hunstanton.
