Vicci Goodwin, Norfolk Cottage Care, has kindly written about her fantastic stay at Palmers Lodge on the Holkham estate…..

Recently we were lucky enough to stay at the beautiful Palmers Lodge on the Holkham estate - and what a place it is! As part of the Norfolk Cottage Care team I am very fortunate to work from Holkham, enjoying the office’s amazing position right next to the beautiful Holkham estate. When I had the chance to stay on the Holkham estate itself, in the grade II listed gatehouse no less, I jumped at the opportunity to explore the area a little more.

Holkham Hall

My family and I live further up the coast, in Cromer, so the journey is short but absolutely beautiful. Winding along the coastal road you are treated to amazing views of Norfolk’s Area of Outstanding Beauty. Big skies, stunning beaches and quirky, bustling coastal towns such as Wells and Blakeney.

Arriving on the picturesque Holkham estate, we turned off just before the famous Holkham Hall meandering through the parkland, through the grazing sheep and finally reached our home for the weekend – Palmers Lodge.

Drive to Palmers Lodge

A beautiful gatehouse, built in 1799, there really is no where like Palmers Lodge elsewhere in Norfolk. And is if it wasn’t pretty enough on the outside, the inside has the complete wow factor! Upon entering the lodge you are welcomed with some amazing goodies – fresh bread, local jam and a lovely bottle of fizz along with other treats.

Bedroom

The property feels luxurious and spacious yet comfortable and welcoming. Upstairs is perfect for a couple – the large and comfy chesterfield sofa sits in front of the fabulous wood burner which we soon had roaring. Uniquely, the bedrooms and bathrooms are in fact in the subterranean level of the lodge. You might imagine the underground space to be dark but the spaces are bright and airy. Perhaps the most stunning and unique feature of the property is the glass atrium which floods the hallway with lots of natural light. In the day you can see the trees on the estate swaying above you and at night it is the perfect spot to appreciate the beautiful clear Norfolk skies and star-gaze.

Feature Window

You really are spoilt for choice at Palmers Lodge. Choose from either a large walk-in shower with a wonderful rainfall showerhead or a nice long soak in the bath after a long walk around the park. Plus side by side basins means no waiting to brush your teeth! For cosy nights in, there are two TVs to choose from. Pick the open living space on the upper level or head for the snug downstairs complete with large bean bag for complete relaxation when watching the television.

Living room

It has to be said once settled into the Lodge, leaving it to explore the local area is difficult! We  decided to pop down the road to Wells for fish and chips and took them back to the lodge as we did not want to miss out on time relaxing in front of the wood burner! Driving back onto the estate we saw a herd of deer pass in front of the car – watching them in the headlights was just completely magical!

Palmers Lodge Nameplate

Overall all my stay in Palmers Lodge was absolutely perfect – I had already fallen in love with the Estate but have now fallen in love with Palmers Lodge and will be going back!

Think you’d also like a stay in one of the enchanting lodges in the Holkham estate? Choose from five lodges, each unique to their setting and original purpose and all restored to a stylish and luxurious level.
