WhataHoot are a family owned, Norfolk based gin distillery, located just 10 miles north-east of Kings Lynn in the picturesque village of Flitcham. The business is under a year old and their wonderful, unique gin is already stocked in more than 80 delis, pubs and bars across the UK. Each beautiful bottle of WhataHoot Dry Gin is created with love and passion – the knowledgeable family combine the traditional gin botanicals, such as juniper, coriander and citrus, with stunning Norfolk flavours of sea samphire and lavender.
WhataHoot was founded by husband and wife Jason and Nicky, and their son Ethan, less than a year ago. In October 2017, Ethan suffered a terrible mountain biking injury. Following his recovery, the family decided to start a lifestyle business together, which up until then had always been a dream. The Crown family strived to share their passion of gin with their customers and develop a brand-new flavour for them to enjoy. Jason Crown states “You could also say that the business was literally started with a glass of gin in hand!”
Surprisingly, the family had no prior knowledge of gin or the distillation process – Jason owned an IT business, Nicky worked for a charity and Ethan owned a social media company. Bringing different skills and qualities to the table, the family decided to research and build their knowledge of gin from scratch.
The fantastic name of WhataHoot was developed naturally. The family’s love of barn owls initially inspired the name, which was enhanced by a loved family member. The name WhataHoot cleverly links the family’s love of owls with having fun and entertainment.
The delicious, smooth taste of WhataHoot gin has been developed and refined over the year. The ingredients of the gin consist of juniper, coriander, angelica root, cassia bark, liquorice powder, orris root powder, orange peel, lemon peel, Norfolk samphire and Norfolk lavender. Infusing the perfect blend of botanicals with distilled Norfolk water creates a unique, refreshing, recognisable flavour. Jason Crown describes What a Hoot gin as a “citrus flavoured, classic dry gin with a contemporary Norfolk finish”. The family are always experimenting with new flavours and ingredients and are looking forward to bringing out some fantastic new flavours for Christmas.
WhataHoot encourage drinking their delicious gin with any mixer you like – the family did not want customers to feel limited or forced into enjoying the drink a particular way. Nicky Crown states “A lot of people are surprised to learn that we don’t have a ‘perfect serve’, obviously we can suggest our favourite ways to enjoy our gin, but we wanted to encourage people explore ‘What is your hoot?’”
You can find WhataHoot gin in many delis, pubs and bars across the UK, including The Feathers Dersingham, The Pigs Edgefield, Bakers and Larners Holt, Creake Abbey, Norfolk Lavender and Gin Temple Norwich. You can also meet the WhataHoot family at many farmers’ markets, crafts fairs and festivals across Norfolk. Be warned – you won’t walk away empty handed!
