Who?  William Galinsky - Artistic Director, Norfolk & Norwich Festival

What?  Norfolk & Norwich Festival is one of the biggest arts Festivals in the UK. Every May around 70,000 people enjoy our programme of theatre, circus, music and free outdoor work across Norwich and Norfolk.

Let's find out more about our advocate of all things cultural...

How long have you lived in Norfolk?  If not born here, what brought you here?

Since the end of 2011. I moved here to start my job as artistic director of Norfolk & Norwich Festival.

Explain the story behind the festival…

We are one of the biggest multi-art form festivals in the UK alongside Manchester, Edinburgh and Brighton. We have our roots in a series of annual fundraisers for the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital at the end of the 18th century. That then became the Triennial Music Festival which became today’s festival. We now produce and present a range of work across the art forms with a big emphasis on unique experiences which respond to a sense of the communities, stories and places in Norfolk and Norwich.

What gets you up in the morning?

My four year old!

If you had to pick one spot in Norfolk to enjoy the vista, where would that be and why?

Holkham beach – just an amazing beach!

What’s your favourite event on the Norfolk calendar, and why?

The Great Yarmouth Hippodrome circus and swimming spectacular each Summer. There is nothing quite like it. I love the Hippodrome so much I am directing the festival’s production of The Tempest there this festival.

Norfolk is rich in wildlife and birdlife - do you have a favourite?  If so, when and where are we most likely to spot it?  Any tips?

Not much of an outdoors man myself – if you want to enjoy birds in a controlled environment I would always suggest Pensthorpe Nature Reserve.
