Giving Back

As a local business, we are passionate about looking after Norfolk. We sponsor several businesses, charities and non-profit organisations in the community which help make Norfolk so special. Here’s just a sample of what we do…

Wheatfen Nature Reserve

Wheatfen Nature Reserve

Wheatfen Nature Reserve, in Surlingham, is Norfolk Cottages nominated Charity. David Bellamy once said "Wheatfen Broad is, in its way, as important as Mount Everest or the giant redwood forests of North America. It is probably the best bit of fenland we have because we know so much about it”. One of Norfolk’s best kept secrets, Wheatfen nature reserve consists of largely open fen, reed beds, swallow carr and two small broads. It is a recognised Site of Special Scientific Interest, one of the last tidal marshes of the Yare Valley and a wonderful place in which to contemplate the wonders of nature.

Today the reserve is managed by the Ted Ellis Trust who’s board, warden and volunteers work to conserve it’s fragile ecology and to keep the land and its wildlife accessible for all. The reserve is free to enter meaning the Trust relies heavily on donations for the upkeep of the wetland. Wheatfen is Norfolk Cottages chosen charity meaning everytime you book with us you have the option to donate. To date we have raised over £10,000 for the reserve and this money is used for important conservation. Projects in the past have included the dredging of Thatch Pond and the building of an educational centre at the Reserve.
