Having
moved to West Norfolk twelve years ago I find myself in the fortunate
position of having several places of historic interest on my doorstep.
On their own each of the following places would pass a very pleasant
couple of hours, combined they would give a full day out, giving an opportunity
to explore away from Norfolk’s beautiful coastal areas.
Castle Acre is a good place to start, situated just off the A1065.
The entrance to the village is through a 13th century flint gateway.
The village is home to impressive ruins of a Norman castle and Cluniac
Priory. The village also offers two inns, two popular tearooms, local
stores and post office.
From Castle Acre take the A1065 to Swaffham, an attractive market
town with a good selection of individual shops, cafes, restaurants
and an excellent market on Saturdays; there is also the added bonus
of free parking.
If time permits a few miles from Swaffham at Oxborough you will find
Oxburgh Hall, Gardens and Woodland Walk. This is a moated Tudor House
built in 1482 by the Bedingfeld family. Descendants of the family still
live in part of the house. The attractive gardens feature a French
parterre, walled orchard and kitchen garden. The woodland walk can
be done in just over an hour. After all this activity a visit to the
National Trust tearooms is always a must for me.
Hope you enjoy my day.
