The pretty village of Fressingfield is situated in the Waveney Valley, North Suffolk, 12 miles east of Diss and just 30 minutes drive from the Heritage Coast of Southwold, Walberswick and Aldeburgh. There is a traditional country pub, The Swan, and an award winning restaurant, The Fox & Goose, only 2 minutes drive away. A well-stocked village shop and post office can be found 1.5 miles away. The city of Norwich is only 40 minutes away and worth a day out. Harleston, an historic market town has lots of specialist shops, a supermarket, pubs and eateries and is only 4 miles away. All in all, Chippenhall is an ideal location for walking, cycling, bird-watching, painting, antique-hunting, golfing and fishing, as well as resting and relaxing.
Chippenhall Hall is a delightful heavily timbered medieval manor with the site of the current house dating back to the Saxon times. Secluded at the end of a long leafy drive, set in 8 acres of rural tranquillity in the heart of Suffolk and recorded in the Domesday Book, it has featured in period films and competitions. From the 12th Century to more modern times, the manor was held by several notable families, many of whom were knights and included the Ufford and Sancroft families. The Sancroft coat of arms is still connected with the house and Dr. William Sancroft was the Archbishop of Canterbury who crowned King Charles I, later to be beheaded, during the 17th Century. |
