North Norfolk Coast

Just show me cottages

North Norfolk is a fabulous holiday destination where you will find the most beautiful sandy beaches, national nature reserves, great pubs and award winning restaurants, quaint villages and Georgian market towns that are all set under our famous big Norfolk skies. Its diverse culture of sea and coast is reflected in the architecture and here you will find beautiful barn conversions, cosy brick-and-flint-walled buildings and traditional fisherman’s cottages to stay in.

Sheringham is one of Norfolk’s most popular destinations and it’s not difficult to see why with its small market town feel, sandy beaches, cliff walks and steam train. Grab a portion of traditional fish and chips, or pop-in for a more substantial meal at one of the many brilliant restaurants. Take the North Norfolk Coast Path and trek to the top of Beeston Bump for some great views of the coastline and the county of Norfolk. Sheringham is home to two railway stations, one line takes you to the city of Norwich and the other is a heritage railway run by volunteers; step into the past as you travel the Poppy Line to Holt on an expertly maintained steam engine.

Next along the coast is Cromer where Victorian grandeur is evident. One of the few towns in Norfolk with a pier, it also has the end of pier theatre where the family show is a trip back in time to slap stick, comedy and dancing. Laughter is guaranteed and we recommend that you take in a performance. The pier is also home to an active RNLI station with visitors’ museum. Learn about the fearless volunteers that have braved tempestuous seas to save many lives and you’ll start to understand the sense of pride the people of Cromer have in their lifeboat men. After a day of activity and sea air tempt your taste buds with our famous Cromer crab, just delicious!

Moving away towards the west, the landscape changes to salt marshes, and creeks. Here you find the coastal villages of Cley-next-the-Sea, Stiffkey, Kelling and Blakeney all situated in the Norfolk Coast Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This stretch of coast is popular with walkers and birdwatchers and attracts over wintering birds in great numbers. From Blakeney and Morston take a guided boat trip to Blakeney Point to see the seals. At Wells-next-the-Sea, drop a crabbing line off the quay and see how many you can catch! There’s also a miniature railway that runs from the quayside to the beach hidden behind a large pine forest.

Don’t miss picturesque Burnham Market with its boutique shops, tea rooms and food stores set around the village green and seek out nearby Burnham Thorpe, birthplace to Admiral Nelson, Norfolk’s favourite son. Another Georgian gem is the thriving town of Holt, which is well worth a visit for its antique shops, art galleries, boutiques, vintage tea rooms and country park; you will wonder where the day went!

North Norfolk has also attracted the cooking fraternity, some famous, who have established restaurants and pubs where the cooking is focused on using local produce much of it sea based; look out for local samphire, mussels, lobster and crab. If this is all too tempting and you would like to take some home to your cottage then drop in to the smokehouse at Cley-next-the-Sea for great fish and patés and then pop over the road to the local deli for Norfolk cheeses and so much more – you will be spoilt for choice.
