My favourite place in Norfolk changes with the seasons and where I walk Basil the dog:
In Winter a walk down Peddars Way on a bright crisp day followed by a visit to the Dabbling Duck in my home village of Great Massingham, great atmosphere, excellent bar and fantastic local food (pre-book or you will probably be disappointed). Dogs welcome on a lead.
You can't beat a walk at West Acre with a paddle in the Fords during Spring. If you have plenty of time the walk over the water meadows to the historic village of Castle Acre is great, with a return route via the Abbey and fields overlooking the Nar Valley. The Stag Public House have a reputation for their selection of Real Ales.
Roydon Common near King's Lynn, an SSI owned and managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust, is a place with unique fauna and flora and the Autumn colours are always spectacular as the sun sets or rises. Catch the common in September with the heather in bloom for a real treat. You may also see Hen Harriers, Merlin and Curlew among others. A great place for a stroll or a longer walk via the ruined Saxon Church of St James at Bawsey returning via the old railway line. Treat yourself for tea at nearby Congham Hall for a grand end to the day.
My favourite haunt in summer is the beach at Brancaster, great for swimming as the tide rolls in over the hot sand and even in the high season you can find a quiet spot for sun bathing, a pic-nic, kite flying and playing family games. Dogs are also welcome all year round. You are spoilt for choice with places to eat on the way to or from the beach, sorry I can't pick a favourite, for a special treat try the Gin Trap at Ringstead or for local colour the Jolly Sailor in Brancaster Staithe.
