North Norfolk Railway - The Poppy Line
Description: North Norfolk's Poppy Line from the seaside resort of Sheringham to the Georgian market town of Holt is one of Britains most scenic heritage railways. From the beautifully original Victorian station at Sheringham, the former Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway line runs along the coast to Weybourne, with wonderful views across the cliffs to the sea. Puffing up a 1 in 80 incline (who said Norfolk was flat?), the train climbs through Kelling Heath and runs into the terminus at Holt. The station at Holt was originally on the M&GN at Stalham on the Norfolk Broads; Poppy Line volunteers dismantled it brick by brick, and carefully re-erected it at Holt. The Poppy Lines 40s Weekend (Sept 15 & 16 2007) has won praise as one of the most imaginative 40s celebrations, with crowds turning up in period dress, the Womens Land Army at Weybourne, a flea market at Holt, and even Spam for lunch. You'll probably also be accosted by a spiv on the train offering black market nylons! Living History Day on July 1st will celebrate the railway and what it did for North Norfolk 100 years ago. The Poppy Line round trip takes about an hour and a quarter, but all day hop-on, hop-off Rover tickets let you explore along the line. There is all-day visitor parking at Holt Station and a public pay and-display car park next to Sheringham Station Ticket Details: See website Opening Times: See website Contact Details: Website: http://www.nnr.co.uk Address: The Station, Sheringham, NR26 8RA Back to Overview Back to Map
