Holkham Hall & Bygones Collection
Description: Holkham Hall is one of Britain's most majestic stately homes, situated in a Deer Park on the beautiful North Norfolk coast. This classic 18th Century Palladian style mansion is a living treasure house of artistic and architectural history. Home to seven generations of the Earls of Leicester, it has something for everyone. See the stunning grandeur of the Marble Hall, the magnificence of the State Rooms and the sheer size of the old kitchen, complete with its original pots and pans. The splendid stables at Holkham were built in the 1860's to accommodate the horses and carriages of the many visitors to the Hall. But with the arrival of the motorcar, the impressive yard gradually fell into disuse. In 1979 they took on a new lease of life when the present Earl of Leicester acquired from Dick Joice, who hosted the popular Anglia Television series "Bygones", his vast collection of old agricultural and domestic memorabilia. His original collection now forms the nucleus of the Museum, which contains thousands of items from times gone by. The History of Farming Exhibition is aimed to help understand how a great Estate such as Holkham works and has evolved. Discover about "Coke of Norfolk" and his role in the great agricultural revolution of the 18th Century.
