Fakenham is one of Norfolk's traditional country towns, which has a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants. It has hosted a weekly market since 1250, and although the goods provided for sale may have changed somewhat, it together with the auction, still provides a very popular day out for bargain hunters! The town also has a cinema and a ten-pin bowling alley as well a National Hunt racecourse. Fakenham is just ten miles from the sandy beach at Holkham, 1.5 miles from Pensthorpe Nature Reserve as featured in the BBC Springwatch nature programme and two miles from The Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe.
