Shelton is a small community hidden in the gentle, largely agricultural landscape of South Norfolk. There are many lovely walks through the countryside which has remained almost unchanged over the centuries. Until the early part of the 16th century, the Sheltons had close connections with the Tudor royal family. As a child, Queen Elizabeth I spent considerable time in the village, ultimately taking sanctuary in the beautiful 15th century church of St Mary, adjacent to the Old Rectory, when her mother, Anne Boleyn, was accused of treason. There are many other places of historical interest in the area, including the fine city of Norwich, just eleven miles away. It is also a good base from which to explore the market towns and pretty villages of the Waveney Valley. A little further afield, the Norfolk Broads and sandy beaches of the coastal towns and villages offer excellent days out for all the family. Golfing, riding, ballooning and other activities are all within easy reach.
