Waveney & North Suffolk
The region is full of unique churches and significant historical sites, as well as magnificent stately homes such as Somerleyton Hall and its beautiful gardens. Arguably one of the most unique historical sites in Britain, Grimes Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors - visitors can descend into a mine shaft dug over 5,000 years ago for a truly unforgettable experience.

Grimes GravesGrime's Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in Britain. A grassy lunar landscape of over 400 shafts, pits, quarries and spoil dumps, they were first named Grim's Graves - meaning the pagan god Grim's quarries, or 'the Devil's holes' - by the Anglo- Saxons. It was not until one of them was excavated in 1870 that they were found to be flint mines dug over 5,000 years ago, during the later Neolithic and early Bronze Ages.

The West Stow Anglo-Saxon VillageThe chance discovery of fragments of pottery earthed during a trial for sand and gravel extraction led to the excavation of West Stow. Between 1965 and 1972 the site was stripped and excavated. Luckily the area had been covered with a sand dune since the 13th century, giving the archaeologists a unique opportunity to study an entire Anglo-Saxon village. Most of the timber had rotted away, but there was enough evidence to plot the changes in the village between the 5th and 7th centuries.
