The North Mid Norfolk
The historically-significant sites of West Norfolk are always worth visiting. The pretty ruins of Castle Acre are a great place to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside, while the historic port and town of King's Lynn has many notable buildings - its Custom House was described by architect Nikolaus Pevsner as "one of the most perfect buildings ever built". The stately home of Holkham Hall - where the movie The Duchess was filmed - is set in beautifully landscaped gardens and is certainly a jewel in Norfolk's architectural crown.

Roman Catholic Cathedral St John’s is the second largest Catholic cathedral in the UK. After nearly a century as the parish church of the Catholic community in Norwich it became the mother church of the new diocese of East Anglia in 1976. It now takes its place with its ‘elder sister’, the Anglican cathedral which is located in the centre of the city. Norwich is one of the few English cities to have two cathedrals and, over the last 30 years, we have grown closer in a spiritual and practical partnership.

Royal Norfolk Regimental MuseumThe Regiment was formed in 1685 and served around the world. The troops brought back some fascinating items from their campaigns, some with obvious military use and some more unusual. There’s an important photographic collection which informs both the displays and a video about the Regiment in India. The extensive medal collection contains examples of every campaign medal and gallantry medal awarded to a Norfolk Regiment officer, including two Victoria Crosses.

Letheringsett WatermillNorfolk's Only Flour Producing Watermill. A watermill on the site at Letheringsett was mentioned in the Domesday book. The building you see today was built in 1802 to replace an earlier mill destroyed by fire. It was originally built to house four pairs of millstones, driven by power created by the iron waterwheel but only two pairs are working today. The water wheel is unusual in that it can be run breastshot but can be changed by a simple shutter to run undershot if the water levels fall in dry weather.

Bircham WindmillStanding in the heart of Norfolk's undulating fields, Bircham Windmill now looks as it did over 100 years ago. At that time over 300 mills ground corn for horse and cattle feed and bread-making in Norfolk. Today, very few windmills are left, and Bircham Mill is considered one of the best still remaining: it is the only windmill in working order in this area open to the public. Visitors can climb the five floors up to the fan stage and, when possible, on windy days, visitors can also see the sails and the milling machinery turning.
